Yannis Maniatis

Yannis Maniatis holds a B.Sc. in Physics, a M.Sc. in Opto-Electronics and a Ph.D. in Physics-Archaeometry from the University of Essex, UK and has Post-Doctoral work at the British Museum Research Laboratory in London. His has dedicated his research career to the field of Archaeometry and Archaeological Sciences. He has established the first Laboratory of Archaeometry in Greece at NCSR Demokritos and set up and run the unique for Greece Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory, fully functional and with an international collaboration network. It is entirely integrated in the Aegean Archaeology contributing significantly to the absolute dating of ancient settlements, historical events and cultural phases. Yannis has also contributed significantly to the understanding of the ancient ceramic technology and the determination of provenance and movement of marble in Antiquity by developing novel methodologies for these and created an extensive database of ancient marble quarries all around the Mediterranean. He is Chairman of the Standing Committee of the International Symposium on Archaeometry since 2002 and President of the International Association for the Study of Marble and Other Stones in Antiquity (ASMOSIA) since 2000. He has received the COSTA-NAVARINO International Archaeometry Award, 2016-2019 for his outstanding contribution to the field of Archaeometry and Archaeological Sciences.
